Kim
36:13
A lot of families were overwhelmed and felt they couldn't take on anything else like televisit. In the areas we serve, many people either can't afford internet or there isn't internet available...
conniejohnson
36:49
Kim I had similar experience, most families who couldn’t access were trying to work themselves
Sandra Holbrook
37:31
Our district was able to provide hotspots to families without connection but still not ideal as the data amount was limitied
Michele Wiley
37:51
Sandra-what district are you in?
Sandra Holbrook
38:15
Albemarle County Public School along with Heather and Racheal.
Michele Wiley
38:56
I am in Manassas Park. We have broadband in the community, but my families work off of unlimited cell plans which really limits how you can do any telehealth model
Ashley Negangard
39:17
I am in Fluvanna and Nelson and over 20% of the county doesn't have internet so was very hard in spring and worried about the fall as well.
Michele Wiley
40:14
I hope most of our families got a breather this summer, but I am concerned many will feel the same very quickly.
Laurell Mauro
40:56
I had the same experience as AJ, I was able to contact about 90% of the families, some said they were good, others were definitely overwhelmed. I had a few opportunities that I felt helpful and had therapeutic interventions.
Michele Wiley
41:14
Does anyone have any tips to engaging families that were successful?
Sandra Holbrook
41:17
I feel parents get so overwhelmed with the academics
Laurell Mauro
42:09
I had the best luck with preschool parents who weren’t as concerned with academics and wanted to keep their kids moving.
conniejohnson
42:18
me too Laurel
Kim
42:23
agreed Laurel!
Michele Wiley
42:23
YES! It seems to be a fine line. I think if we can piggyback on to the teachers, (like Danielle did in Loudoun) would be great
Michele Wiley
43:00
Some of my teachers, especially pre-k struggled with the online classroom
Ashley Negangard
43:08
Also, worried about if we are doing all virtual making treatments for every kid on our caseload seems overwhelming. Along with worried about attention spans of preschoolers, parents, etc.
Danielle’s iPad mini
43:35
I was able to take a look at the activities that the teacher was engaging them and make suggestions to families to help them engage in those lessons.
Kim
43:37
For my more involved kiddos, most of the families had their routines and weren't interested in telehealth - which kind of surprised me that they didn't want input.
Heather Russell
43:43
My best sessions were recurring sessions that occurred either with the entire team (PT/OT/SLP/teacher) and/or myself and teacher on a zoom with the family.
Laurell Mauro
43:53
I found it interesting that my families that are more pushy/needy during the school year were not interested in PT support during the spring. Not sure where that will go moving forward. I too worked with the spec ed teacher the vast majority of the time.
conniejohnson
44:02
Not all of my families had standers and gait trainers at home which made it difficult to do the things that happen in school
Heather Russell
44:37
If teachers sent out a grid of weekly activities I added a gross motor or movement based activity.
conniejohnson
44:49
Heather I did that too
Laurell Mauro
45:09
I felt the same way especially with the IDS/more physically involved kiddos. I do lots of equipment with them and that wasn’t a concern in the spring.
Laura Fultz
45:17
Any insight on addressing goals as we amend IEPs to reflect virtual services? as well as strategies for data collection? thanks!
Kim
46:05
Great question Laura!
Heather Russell
46:15
Some of our families opted out of virtual services b/c they were receiving support from outpatient services via telehealth.
Michele Wiley
46:50
I did see information about data collection in the VDOE guidance, but again, nothing specific. But it was clear it needed to be done.
Laurell Mauro
46:57
FCPS is going to be doing IEP addendums before school starts to discuss hours/goals, but we haven’t been given any guidance as yet on how that will look for us. I’m thinking that will take up the majority of our time when we get back.
Taylor Gore
47:28
Kasia I work in Frederick County Public Schools, who are currently planning on going back in person for 2 days per week, similar to your county. I cover 10 schools and need some guidance on how you plan on providing services at the same frequency with the number of schools per day having to increase for scheduling or will you amend frequencies? Or will your services stay virtual?
Michele Wiley
50:14
I am also trying to figure it out.
Michele Wiley
50:52
US DOE said these types of models won’t look the same, but the actual mechanics have not been addressed by US DOE or VDOE.
Michele Wiley
51:10
* same as face to face, full time models
Sandra Holbrook
51:12
All our IEPs were redone at the end of the school year with goals to reflect in person instruction. What type of goals are folks thinking of since all our goals are specific to being in school etc.
Taylor Gore
51:47
Thanks for the clarification! It sounds like our counties operate similarly
Michele Wiley
51:54
For virtual, I am thinking about what parents need to support at home learning.]
Michele Wiley
53:29
I think that is a great point AJ. Certainly home, and how the student performs there is different. Maybe a positive outcome will be more empowered parents?
Laurell Mauro
53:31
I like that idea AJ, asking the parents what they need for the experience to be the most effective.
Taylor Gore
53:43
All of my sessions were focused on asking parents what they needed as far as supports during the closure in the spring and were not focused on IEP goals per se. How do you plan on gearing virtual sessions towards data collection and goals as opposed to purely supportive check-ins?
Kim
53:52
In thinking about goals, it makes me think of Part C (early invention) like more goals...
Kim
54:41
It's almost like we need virtual goals and in person goals...
Laurell Mauro
55:02
One of the positives of the distance learning has been the regular contact with the families that we don’t always get when the students are in school. It has generally been helpful in developing rapport with parents.
Kim
55:15
agreed!
Kristin Sanders, PT, MPT, PCS
55:25
Maybe an addendum with goals that states it is in place until on person school resumes?
Michele Wiley
55:32
I think I would use observation (maybe have the student do stair walking and time it, or playing with a sibling and looking for a particular skill?
conniejohnson
55:41
Kristin I like that idea
Michele Wiley
55:49
I like that too
Heather Russell
55:51
goals will change but I would imagine service times will need to be adjusted
Debbie Echternach
56:00
if virtual, possibly a shift to a more coaching model?
Kim
56:05
absolutely agree Heather
Kim
56:14
Yes Debbie!
Michele Wiley
56:27
Yes, absolutely coaching!
Laurell Mauro
56:40
I think we will need to be clear on the PLOP on what our services are going to look like.
Michele Wiley
56:52
Yes, and how it is needed and related.
anmoffitt
57:03
yes, particularly for that coaching model which is where we can serve our students at home best
Kristin Sanders, PT, MPT, PCS
57:35
Services also should be included in the "temporary" addendum plan with modifications to frequency, etc based on what the family is able to realistically do and wants to do.
Michele Wiley
57:54
I agree
Michele Wiley
58:38
Where are they going to get the supplies??? I am still having trouble finding Clorox wipes and spray!
Taylor Gore
58:57
Frederick County requested a spreadsheet for each of our students explaining the need for PPE above a mask, including face shield, gowns, and gloves. I have requested this for all students that receive direct services because we cannot socially distance and provide effective services.
anmoffitt
59:16
We did the temporary plan in the spring but have not yet gotten guidance in Fairfax moving forward, my belief is that we will drop temporary plans and just addend the IEPs
Taylor Gore
59:22
I don't know if this will be honored or not but it was offered
conniejohnson
01:00:29
PPE document will be posted here https://sites.google.com/view/virginiaschoolotandpt/home?authuser=0
Kim
01:00:41
sooo with the PPE discussion - thoughts on push in vs pull out?
Kim
01:01:16
and not changing clothes...
Kim
01:01:24
switching out PPE?
Kim
01:01:35
time!
Kim
01:01:38
exactly!!
Michele Wiley
01:01:40
And possibly cross contaminating?
Kim
01:02:45
soooo many moving parts to all these decisions
Kim
01:03:11
it won't be the same for a very long time
Michele Wiley
01:03:19
Are the county health departments involved in these decisions? I know they are in Loudoun and Manassas Park.
Katie Labuda
01:03:37
one of the ideas we floated to still be able to push in was coaching a TA or teacher
Katie Labuda
01:03:49
if students were in school buildings
Michele Wiley
01:04:12
So not really handling, touching but guiding the classroom personnel?
Katie Labuda
01:04:23
yes
Katie Labuda
01:04:42
therapist could be video even
Taylor Gore
01:05:25
What about offering virtual services more frequently for the kids that are coming in person and occasionally going into the building to assess progress and provide training to caregivers? This was a plan I was going to float by my director so that we don't need to decrease frequencies so much
Heather Russell
01:05:39
I like that idea ! The PT doing a virtual visit and having the teacher/TA be the facilitator with the student.
Michele Wiley
01:05:47
That is a thought-maybe we “call in” to the class?
Danielle’s iPad mini
01:05:54
Taylor I was thinking the same.
Taylor Gore
01:06:14
That solves the transportation issue, the multiple contamination issue, and the frequency issue
Taylor Gore
01:06:20
as long as the staffing is available
Heather Russell
01:06:28
I have been struggling with the exposure (to students and myself) if I am in multiple schools and classrooms each day.
conniejohnson
01:06:39
Heather I feel the same
Michele Wiley
01:06:57
Laurie Ray the APTA school SIG says the liability issue should go through the division attroney
Susan Cook
01:07:37
I have recommended that families contact the CATs program if they need equipment at home.
Michele Wiley
01:07:45
I have too
Kim
01:08:39
that's actually another issue - how are we going to clean that equipment - especially when we don't have equipment for each student
Renee Sturgill
01:08:43
arlington did send equipment home after the attorneys drew up the agreement.
anmoffitt
01:09:17
Renee, how did you get that pick up arranged, equipment sanitized etc? did you train the family virtually ?
Renee Sturgill
01:09:23
the equipment was cleaned, moved to central location am
Debbie Echternach
01:10:07
CATS is an excellent resource !
Renee Sturgill
01:10:14
and families picked it up, uosng social distance measures. they had to to agree to do a telesession with PT within 2 days
anmoffitt
01:10:38
Did your waiver say that they were using it at their own risk or did it say that they were accepting risk and using it as instructed by the PT?
Ashley Negangard
01:10:46
YES!!!!!!
Taylor Gore
01:10:47
100%
Michele Wiley
01:10:51
Yes!!!!
Kim
01:11:03
CATS is doing a fund raiser during October - we need to make sure we support them so our students can continue to benefit from their amazing work!!
Sandra Holbrook
01:11:05
Especially when your own kids are home and they are needing help too.
Renee Sturgill
01:11:37
AJ, it said they had to do virtual training before using it.
Michele Wiley
01:11:39
Our superintendent has said he is holding all of us-families, students, teachers, staff-harmless and extending us much grace
Michele Wiley
01:13:26
This continues to be an entirely new landscape and there is no map. We need to be OK with just OK-which is hard for overachieving PTs.
